Firstly, it’s important to understand the basic concept
of “Holistic Health”. In simple words, Holistic Health is your perspective towards
life. How you approach life on day-to-day basis and how you conceive it.
Physical:
There’s been lot of emphasis recently on Holistic lifestyle. It's a simple yet profound concept that can be interpreted in different ways by each person. There
are many valuable things that you can learn from this method.
The Holistic Health is based on mainly 5 concepts:
- Physical
- Emotional
- Social
- Spiritual; and
- Intellectual/ mental
Physical:
The physical health isn't exactly how muscular you are or how toned is your body. You could be the one who look super fit but isn't exactly healthy. It is a complete physical well-being of one's self. You could be the one who gets sick very often and is always exhausted or is experiencing some sort of discomfort or pain frequently. These are the signs that shows you are neglecting your physical well being. It's time to change the concept of "Physical Fitness" in your life. Try different stuff and see what works for you and what not.
Emotional:
Emotional health pertains to one's general emotional state. Being happy, sad ,confused, frustrated etc. is just part of every person's life. It's our ability to recognize and express emotions adequately. It relates to our self esteem as well as our ability to control our feelings and to maintain a realistic and practical perspective on situations. There are certain ways that helps to cure poor emotional wellness, but each methods differs with each persons character. The ultimate goal should be to pursue individual happiness and be optimistic.
Social:
Your social life tells a story. It defines how we interact, how we behave and how involved we are while maintaining a socially acceptable standard. The social dimension of health refers to our ability to make and maintain meaningful relationships with others. It's important to point out that someone with a lot of friends isn't necessarily more socially well than someone with few friends. To be socially well means that your expectations and desires regarding your interactions or involvement with others are being met. Social health affects the other dimensions of health in many ways. A bad social life can lead a person to question their purpose or feel isolated and unwanted. Such feelings can easily demotivate someone.
Spiritual:
People often find purpose from a belief or faith system, while others create their own purpose. A person who has purpose to life is said to be healthier than those who don’t see a purpose to life. Spiritual health is basically our sense of overall purpose in life. Spiritual health easily affects emotional and mental health, as having a purpose in life can help you to apply yourself better to achieving goals. Having a purpose also helps people to maintain a proper perspective on life and overcome adversity.
It's not a smooth journey for most of us. Going on a journey of self discovery, requires patience and the never giving up attitude. You find your purpose when you are able to distinguish between your needs and wants.
Intellectual/ Mental
Intellectual wellness means whether or not we meet our desired level of intellectual stimulation. It refers to self awareness. Now, this can easily be misunderstood with the emotional health. Intellectual/ Mental health is more the functioning of the brain, while emotional health refers to a persons mood. Growth in mental health can come as a result of increased physical activity, enrolling yourself to keep learning or any sort of training. It leads to an increase in self esteem as mental performance improves. Greater self esteem then leads to more confidence in social situations and that can lead one to ask the larger questions about life leading to increased spiritual health.
There can be various more dimensions to holistic health as well. It could be your financial, occupational, environmental and many more. What's important is all are inter related. Adversity to one affects others which causes a setback. Holistic Health isn't a new age theory indeed it's an ancient thesis that's important in this day and age. The overall goal of holistic medicine is entire wellness, not simply a lack of disease or physical pain. Experts can guide you in a holistic way of living and there are many valuable things that you can learn from this approach. It can greatly enhance the quality of your life and overall health and well being. But, in the end its up to you, how you perceive it and adapt your lifestyle.
